For nearly five decades, ELAWC has been part of my life and my journey. I first came to the East Los Angeles Rape Hotline in 1978 while helping a dear friend find support after an attempted sexual assault. At a women’s gathering, I met courageous Chicana and Latina activists who showed me what was possible through education, confidence and community.

That experience changed my life. I became a volunteer Rape Hotline Advocate, ELAWC’s first Spanish-speaking self-defense instructor, director of its bilingual Spanish-language HIV/AIDS Hotline and, from 1994 to 2007, Executive Director. During my leadership, the organization became the East Los Angeles Women’s Center—a name that more fully reflected its commitment to ending violence against women and children.

Today, I am proud to continue serving ELAWC as a consultant, with the same passion and dedication that first inspired me many years ago. The compassion, friendship and solidarity I found here shaped the woman I am and remain at the heart of my lifelong commitment to our community.
